Outline of Text

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:1 - KJV

  1. And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

Elijah the Tishbite, who lived in Gilead, said to Ahab "As sure as the Lord God of Israel lives, who I stand before and serve, there will not be any dew or rain for years, until I say so."

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:2 - KJV 2. And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,

And God's word came to him and said

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:3 - KJV 3. Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

Get away from there, and go to the east, and hide yourself by the brook called Cherith, that is near Jordan.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:4 - KJV 4. And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

And here is what will happen: you will drink from the brook and I have told the ravens to come and feed you there.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:5 - KJV 5. So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

So he went as God told him, and he stayed by the brook Cherith, near Jordan.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:6 - KJV 6. And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

And ravens brought him both bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening: and he drank from the brook.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:7 - KJV 7. And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

And after awhile, the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:8 - KJV 8. And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,

And the word of the Lord came to him again and said

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:9 - KJV 9. Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

Get up, go to Zarephath, in the region of Zidon, and live there: look, I have commanded a widow woman there to take care of you.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:10 - KJV 10. So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

So he got up and went to Zarephath. When he got to the gate of the city, the widow woman was there gathering sticks: and he cried to her and said "Please get me some water in a pot so I can drink."

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:11 - KJV 11. And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

As as she was going to get it, he said to her "Please bring me a little piece of bread."

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:12 - KJV 12. And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

And she said "As sure as the LORD your God lives, I don't have a cake. All I have is a handful of flour in a barrel, and a little bit of oil in a jar. Look, I'm getting some sticks together so I can go in and prepare that meal for my son, so we can eat and then die."

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:13 - KJV 13. And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

And Elijah said to her "Don't be afraid, go ahead and do what you said: but first, make me a little cake and bring it to me, and afterwards, make some for your son."

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:14 - KJV 14. For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

Because this is what the Lord God of Israel says "The barrel of flour will not go away, nor will the bottle of oil, until the day that God sends rain to the earth."

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:15 - KJV 15. And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

And she went and did what Elijah said, and she and he and her household did eat for many days.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:16 - KJV 16. And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

And the barrel of flour never ran out or got old, neither did the bottle of oil, just like God has spoken through Elijah.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:17 - KJV 17. And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

And after these things, this woman's son got sick, and it was really bad, and he stopped breathing.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:18 - KJV 18. And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?

And she said to Elijah "What do I have to do with you, you man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and to kill my son?"

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:19 - KJV 19. And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

And he said to her "Give me your son" and he took her out of her arms, and carried him up to the loft, we he was living, and put him on his own bed.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:20 - KJV 20. And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

And he cried to the LORD, and said "O Lord my God, did you bring evil to this widow who I'm living with by killing her son?"

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:21 - KJV 21. And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.

And he stretched himself over the child, and he cried to God and he said "O LORD my God, I beg of you, let this child's soul come back to him."

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:22 - KJV 22. And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

And the Lord heard Elijah's voice; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he came back to life.

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:23 - KJV 23. And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.

And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of his room and gave him to his mother: and Elijah said "See, your son is alive."

[!bible] 1 Kings 17:24 - KJV 24. And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.

And the woman said to Elijah, Now I know you are a man of God because of this, and I know that the word of God in your mouth is the truth.
